On 2/13/2000, Gus Johnson died at the age of 86. I recall our interview in North Glen, Colorado as being one of the more painful experiences I had during the making of Forgotten Tenor. Unlike the other remaining members of the Count Basie Septet who were active and still playing in 1993, Gus was suffering from Alzheimer's disease and had difficulty responding to my questions. The long, protracted filmed interview with Mr. Johnson speaks about the fragility of all our lives but also captures the sparkle and enthusiasm he had for the music and variety of collaborations experienced during a fifty year career. During my visit, Gus and his wife, Mildred, were extremely gracious and hospitable, providing a warm and supportive environment to continue my work. --Abraham Ravett |
